5 Resume Writing Tips to Highlight Your Skills

Here are 5 simple ways to highlight your resume skills so that your resume gets to the top of the “pile.”

1. Use Specific Examples-You can identify sets in general terms, such as “Communication Skills,” but underneath those skill headings, cite specifics; experiences you’ve had that have required those resume skills to be used, numbers and dates all help to reinforce that you do, indeed, have what’s needed for the job.

2. Use Action Words and Phrases-Most potential employers will give your resume more attention if you use words and phrases that describe specific skills rather than those that are vague and easily misinterpreted.

3. Use the Physical Appearance of Your Resume-Hiring personnel have stacks and stacks of resumes to sift through; you have a better chance of having your resume looked by using subtle differences in the color of the paper or the font. If a prospective employer is drawn to the appearance of the document, the chances increase that they will read your resume.

4. Use a skills-based or functional resume format-Setting your resume up in this format is another way to bring more attention to your abilities rather than your work history. This format is one in which you provide information on the page before listing your work history. This format is especially useful for those entering (or re-entering the work force). Just remember to be concise, and try to keep the resume to one page (two at the most).
5. Include Relevant Non-“work” responsibilities and/or Experiences-Sometimes, your work history may not provide a complete picture of all of your skills. You may have gained leadership experience or the ability to work with others through volunteer positions, roles in student government, or even any classes you may have taken. Not only do these show other skills, but they show a willingness to learn more or do more than the position requires.

These tips by no means cover all of the tips available to help when resume writing, but coupled with other resume how to information, they will help you design a resume that will get you hired.
